There are 4 characters in total that live on the satellite. they all inhabit a different part of the satellite and the player will be able to physically move around in these parts in the game. Each character has its own distinctive visual style and medium different from each other and the world they life in. The visual design and narrative of all four characters are based on their own personality type and narrative.
The four characters are each based on one personality type and the related characteristics in both their physical appearance and their psyche.
In contrast to the development of the satellite itself the development of the characters was way more thought-out and controlled. This was because the characters needed to be impact-full on their own and stand out from each other. Their individuality had to become an important part of the game experience, if not the most important one. Because of this the visual development didn’t start until their narrative was already largely developed.
The tree: the melancholic
melancholic (also called melancholy) long response time-delay, response sustained at length, if not, seemingly, permanently. (cold/dry)
tend to be analytical and detail-oriented, and they are deep thinkers and feelers. They are introverted and try to avoid being singled out in a crowd. A melancholic personality leads to self-reliant individuals who are thoughtful, reserved, and often anxious. They often strive for perfection within themselves and their surroundings, which leads to tidy and detail oriented behaviour.
Backstory: Once acknowledged as a strong and respected figure, the melancholy is now nothing more than a poor soul who has given up life. He has been stuck on the satellite for so long, his body has merged together with the tree he once rested his tired body on. Waiting for his body to finally give up, he thinks back to the time when his life was full meaning. Now there is nothing left but vague memories. Through his inter-growth with the tree, he begins to perceive the feelings and thoughts of the being within the satellite. He feels empathy for his feelings and thoughts but warns the player about its origins.
Sonne: the phlegmatic
phlegmatic a longer response-delay, but short-lived response. (cold/wet)
tend to be relaxed, peaceful, quiet, and easy-going.They are sympathetic and care about others, yet they try to hide their emotions. Phlegmatic individuals also are good at generalising ideas or problems to the world and making compromises.
Backstory: Once sent on a mission to return the mysterious egg to its owner in the sky, Sonne watches over it day and night. Detecting a hostile identity from inside the satellite, she lives on the edge of one of the 2 panels while staring at the stars in hope of a potential saviour. She is built to protect and return the egg at all costs and will try to achieve this until the end of her life. Because of this she lives in constant fear. Not only is she afraid for what lives in inside the satellite but also whether she can achieve her goal.
Toshiba: the sanguine
sanguine quick, impulsive, and relatively short-lived reactions. (hot/wet)
highly talkative, enthusiastic, active, and social. Sanguines tend to be more extroverted and enjoy being part of a crowd; they find that being social, outgoing, and charismatic is easy to accomplish. Individuals with this personality have a hard time doing nothing and engage in more risk seeking behaviour.
backstory Toshiba crashed down on the satellite with his spaceship after its navigation was disrupted by an unknown signal. He is since trying to fix his spaceship and is also trying to build a communication transmitter. Toshiba is an intergalactic mailman and is slowly unpacking the mail he brought with him. Although he wont be able to leave for a long time it doesn't really seem to bother him.
MILO: the choleric
choleric short response time-delay, but response sustained for a relatively long time. (hot/dry)
tend to be more extroverted. They are described as independent, decisive, and goal-oriented, and ambitious. These combined with their dominant, result-oriented outlook make them natural leaders. In Greek, Medieval and Renaissance thought, they were also violent, vengeful, and short-tempered
backstory Milo is the deteriorating mind inside the satellite. Once built to serve an evil civilisation, Milo has since been discarded. treated like a tool that has lost its purpose, Milo was left alone in a remote corner of the empty space. Here, Milo became more and more lonely and is anxious he will die alone without purpose. Hoping someone would find him, he constantly sends a distress signal to lure passers-by. Although he has been able to lure a few stowaways, he still hasn't managed to make real contact. He is not aware of the consequences of his actions and proceeds to keeps everyone trapped.
